Prophets Just Can't Get Any Respect These Days

posted Monday, 3 December 2007

In the spirit of the good old days were never what they used to be. The recent frakas with the Brit teacher and Mohammed the Teddy Bear brings to mind how we Houlihans had this routine we called "The Miseries of Prophet Sean." (Prophet Sean being my father). He would go about town conning everyone he met with his good deal less than wise wisdom until he got home. His dear Gertie (my mother) would have none of it. Sometimes it would be about finances, sometimes politics, or personal advise. My father came out on the winning end until be got home, where he never won. The shtick gave me plenty of opportunity to provide humorous affects on my cornet or play middle man for the great one himself. Bottom line is that when it is all said and done there has always been a corner of our culture that remained highly skeptical with the sage whether he be local or ancient. Wouldn't know that these days if you listened to all those talkers on the TV, but then if you do there is not much I can do for you anyway.

I imagine that somewhere in Texas some little girl goes to bed each night cuddling with her stuffed armadillo she calls Jesus, and the mother thinks its just the most wonderful thing anyone could come up with, and we are talking about the son of God here, not some dime a dozen prophet. So coming from this culture that, whatever its faults, thinks there is nothing wrong with a little girl cuddling with the almighty, we have this woman, who must have not heard the expression that when in an islamic country you do as the islamists do, allow her students to name a teddy bear (how many teddy bears are there in Sudan anyway) after the prophet Mohammed. Who could find fault in that?

OK, maybe every moslem everywhere could find fault with it. It's there prophet after all. It is not the finding fault that raises an eyebrow or two, it is the degree of fault. Did they take the erring woman aside and explain that what she allowed was not a good idea, and that maybe an apology or public confession of woeful ignorance might be in order? Hey, why be sensible about it when you have been granted the opportunity to act like a culture of wackos without green cards? There collective preferred solution was that the woman should be put in front of a firing squad with loaded guns I presume. But then this is a culture that takes 19 year old rape victims and provides a remedy for the injustice of 200 lashes to the victim.

Am I being too harsh here? It could very well be that in every Mosque in our fair land the head Inman is telling his congregation that its time that their fellow moslems joined the 15th century, and if so then bravo for them, but I doubt it. Don't get me wrong. This is not an anti religious rant; it's an anti wacko rant, and there is nothing in any religion, secular or otherwise, that would prevent you from someday joining that ever growing and prospering community.
